I want to move to NYC but I need help, where is the best area to live in NYC?

I want area with diverse community that accepts me, jobs for graduate students and no crimes or any criminal activity. I am looking for great quality place like upper east side or at least an area that I can afford for rent cost. Any New Yorker can answer my question please?
